A Cinematic Suite
by Sam Nuttmann
Album Synopsis
Set against the dramatic peaks and moss-drenched rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, Notes on the Autumn Drift is a cinematic music suite and visual poem by Sam Nuttmann. The suite translates the quiet solitude and cool atmospheric shifts of autumn in Index, WA into rich acoustic compositions – featuring accordion, piano, and bowed strings intertwined with natural river and rain soundscapes.
Short Films
Notes on the Autumn Drift was created as a continuous dialogue between film and music, with both shaped side-by-side by the surrounding landscape. Rather than scoring to finished edits, the acoustic compositions and visual stories grew together – blending bowed strings, piano, and raw Skykomish River soundscapes to capture the quiet turn of fall in Index, Washington.
Autumn Returns
The turning of the leaves, a sudden bite in the morning air, and low-hanging fog signal the return of fall in Index, WA. Born directly out of that crisp morning transition, this song and short film mark the opening chapter of a new album suite – capturing the raw, atmospheric beauty of the season as it unfolds.
Morning Of Mist
Walking outside this morning, the air was heavy with fog, blurring the lines of the trees and giving the whole valley a supernatural presence. This song and visual piece grew directly out of that morning’s magic – translating the mist and soft light into sound and picture.
Rivers Rising
After the rain cleared in Index, I spent the morning exploring the local rivers and caught the start of the salmon run. Witnessing them fight their way up waterfalls inspired this song. To capture the full story, I swam alongside them in the river – translating that cold, surge of energy directly into sound and picture.
Flight of the Salmon
Filmed above and beneath a surging waterfall in Index, Flight of the Salmon witnesses hundreds of salmon attempting their extraordinary leap upstream. The song and short film weave aerial frames with underwater perspectives to capture the untamed spirit of the Pacific Northwest in autumn.
It Starts with a Drop
A behind-the-scenes look at the writing process for a new song, captured during a seasonal autumn downpour among the evergreens in Index, Washington.
Through the Highs and Lows
Moving between shadowed storm clouds and sudden, brilliant sunshine, Through the Highs and Lows explores the volatile temperament of autumn. Filmed across shifting light in the valley, the piece pairs contrasting visual moods with an evolving score to capture the true emotional arc of the season.
